Guinea president dissolves all 40 political parties in the country ahead of elections as he tries to become president forever

Guinea’s government has dissolved 40 political parties, including the country’s three main opposition groups, through a decree issued late at night.

The decision was announced by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation less than two months after Mamady Doumbouya was sworn in as president.

According to the ministry, the parties were dissolved for failing to meet their legal obligations.

The decree states that the affected groups immediately lose their legal recognition and their ability to manage party assets.

“This dissolution entails the immediate loss of the legal personality and status of the parties concerned,” the order said.

It also bars the parties from carrying out political activities or using their names, logos, emblems or other identifying symbols.

Among the organisations dissolved are three prominent opposition groups.

They include the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea led by Cellou Dalein Diallo, the Rally of the People of Guinea associated with former president Alpha Condé, and the Union of Republican Forces.

The decree also states that the parties’ assets have been placed under sequestration.

A curator has been appointed to supervise their management and transfer, although the authorities did not indicate who will eventually assume control of the properties.

Doumbouya, 41, first came to power in 2021 after overthrowing Alpha Condé, who had been Guinea’s first democratically elected president. He was sworn in as president earlier this year.
