ADC Spokesperson Accuses APC of Weakening Opposition, Warns of Political Instability
The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has launched a scathing attack on Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of systematically undermining opposition parties and endangering the country’s democratic framework.
Abdullahi, in a strongly worded statement delivered via social media and media appearances, described the current administration as “the most shameless in Nigeria’s history,” alleging persistent interference in the internal affairs of opposition parties.
The ADC spokesman pointed to a pattern of events involving opposition platforms, including the Peoples Redemption Party and internal crises within other political parties, which he claimed were being instigated or exacerbated by the ruling party. According to him, these actions are part of a broader strategy to weaken political competition ahead of future elections.
Abdullahi further warned that the alleged sabotage of opposition structures could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic stability. He argued that suppressing dissenting political voices and destabilising rival parties risks creating a de facto one-party system, a development he described as dangerous for governance and national cohesion.
The accusations come amid heightened tensions within Nigeria’s political landscape, where opposition parties have repeatedly raised concerns about external interference, leadership crises, and the role of electoral authorities. In earlier instances, the ADC had accused both the government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of acting under political pressure to weaken opposition momentum.
Recent developments have also seen opposition figures intensify consultations and protests, insisting on the need to safeguard multiparty democracy. Analysts note that the consolidation of opposition forces within the ADC and allied movements has triggered increased political contestation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While the APC has consistently denied allegations of attempting to impose a one-party state, Abdullahi maintained that continued actions perceived as hostile to opposition parties could ultimately destabilise Nigeria’s political system and erode public confidence in democratic institutions.
The unfolding dispute underscores the deepening rivalry between the ruling party and opposition blocs, raising fresh concerns about the health of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy as the next election cycle approaches.
