NANS Faults EFCC Chairman Over Student Fraud Claims
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned a statement by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, alleging that 60 percent of university students are involved in fraudulent practices.
In a statement released this Wednesday by National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Ajasa, the association described the claim as an unsubstantiated generalization that unfairly criminalizes hardworking students.
NANS warned that such reckless assertions by a public official could lead to the international stigmatization of Nigerian youth, potentially affecting their access to global scholarships and academic collaborations.
The student body challenged the EFCC to provide verifiable data to support the figure or issue an immediate retraction to protect the national image and the future of Nigerian scholars.
While acknowledging that cybercrime is a societal challenge, NANS maintained that students should be seen as innovators and leaders rather than broad targets for criminal labeling.
