Wike: Supreme Court Validates Our Convention, Says No Factions Remain in PDP
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been decisively resolved following a recent judgment by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Wike asserted that the apex court’s ruling has effectively eliminated the existence of parallel leadership structures within the party. According to him, the verdict provides final clarity on the legitimacy of the party’s leadership and brings an end to months of internal wrangling.
The controversy had stemmed from disputes surrounding the PDP’s national convention held between November 15 and 16, 2025. The convention, which was marred by factional disagreements and legal challenges, resulted in competing claims to the party’s leadership. However, the Supreme Court, in its ruling, invalidated aspects of the process, a decision Wike insists has now restored order and unified command within the party.
Wike maintained that the judgment should be seen as a turning point for the PDP, urging members to close ranks and focus on rebuilding the party ahead of future political contests. He dismissed lingering claims of factionalism, stressing that “there are no factions anymore,” and called on all aggrieved members to align with the recognized leadership structure.
The former Rivers State governor further emphasized that adherence to the rule of law remains critical to the party’s stability, noting that the Supreme Court’s pronouncement is binding on all members. He warned against actions capable of reigniting internal divisions, adding that the PDP must now concentrate on strengthening its position as a leading opposition force in Nigeria.
Political observers say the ruling could have far-reaching implications for the PDP’s internal cohesion, particularly as it seeks to reposition itself after a series of electoral setbacks and protracted leadership disputes. The party has in recent months grappled with deep-seated divisions involving key stakeholders, with several court cases filed over the legitimacy of its conventions and executives.
With the apex court’s decision now in place, attention is expected to shift toward reconciliation efforts and strategic realignment within the PDP, as party leaders work to consolidate unity and regain public confidence.
