ADC to Proceed with Nationwide Congresses
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced its decision to continue with its scheduled party congresses across all levels, from ward to the national convention, amid ongoing disputes over internal leadership and electoral oversight.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, clarified that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not mandated by law to monitor party congresses. He explained that the party’s position is based on its interpretation of existing legal provisions and recent court pronouncements.
Abdullahi further stated that a court order being referenced in some quarters did not dissolve the current National Working Committee (NWC) led by former Senate President, David Mark. According to him, the leadership remains intact and fully empowered to oversee party activities, including the congress process.
The ADC spokesman also disclosed that the party had formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission of its planned congresses in line with procedural requirements. He added that the electoral body acknowledged receipt of the notification, reinforcing the party’s confidence in proceeding with the exercise.
The development comes amid heightened political activity within opposition parties as they prepare for future electoral contests. Party congresses, which involve the election of officials at various levels, are considered critical in shaping internal structures and determining leadership ahead of general elections.
While the ADC maintains that its actions are lawful and procedurally sound, political observers note that internal cohesion and clarity of leadership will be crucial as the party moves forward with its nationwide congresses.
