Al-Taawoun Handed Two-Match Stadium Ban Over Fans’ Mockery of Diogo Jota’s Death

Saudi Arabian club Al-Taawoun have reportedly been handed a two-match stadium ban following an incident involving supporters who allegedly mocked the death of Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota in the direction of fellow Portugal international Rúben Neves.

The incident has attracted widespread condemnation because of the deeply sensitive nature of the remarks and gestures reportedly made by sections of the Al-Taawoun support. Jota, who was a prominent figure in Portuguese football, died in July 2025 alongside his brother André Silva in a road traffic collision in Spain. His death prompted tributes from across the football world, including teammates, opponents, clubs and supporters.

The reported incident involving Rúben Neves has been particularly controversial because of the close relationship between Neves and Jota. The two players represented Portugal together and were also teammates at club level earlier in their careers. Consequently, references to Jota’s death directed at Neves have been viewed as crossing a serious line between football rivalry and personal abuse.

As a result, disciplinary authorities in Saudi football have imposed a two-match stadium closure on Al-Taawoun, meaning the club will be required to play its next two designated home matches without supporters inside the stadium. The punishment represents a significant disciplinary response and underlines the responsibility placed on clubs to control the conduct of their fan base.

Beyond the sporting consequences, the episode has renewed discussion about the boundaries of football rivalry and the treatment of players and their families following tragedy. Passion and rivalry are fundamental parts of football, but personal tragedies involving the death of a player or loved one carry a level of sensitivity that extends well beyond the normal competitive environment.

For Al-Taawoun, the stadium ban is also likely to serve as a reminder of the importance of supporter behaviour and the responsibility clubs have for maintaining an appropriate atmosphere at their matches. While football authorities continue to take disciplinary measures against unacceptable conduct, incidents of this nature demonstrate why respect and sportsmanship remain important principles within the game.

The controversy surrounding the incident has once again placed the spotlight on the relationship between supporters, players and football’s disciplinary authorities. For Rúben Neves and those who knew Jota personally, the circumstances are especially painful, while the wider football community continues to remember Diogo Jota for his career and contribution to the sport.

Powerofnaija Media will continue to follow developments surrounding the disciplinary action against Al-Taawoun and any further statements from the club, Saudi football authorities or the players involved.
