El-Rufai Rearrested by DSS After EFCC Bail, Raises Political Questions
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was on Wednesday night rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) moments after he regained freedom from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in a dramatic turn that has triggered political concern among his supporters.
El-Rufai had reportedly been granted bail by the EFCC at about 8 p.m. after hours of detention. But as he stepped out of the anti-graft agency’s headquarters, DSS operatives allegedly moved in and took him into custody in what sources described as a calculated operation that appeared designed to keep the former governor in continued detention.
Security sources linked the DSS action to allegations that El-Rufai unlawfully intercepted the telephone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu — a claim his allies have dismissed as implausible and politically motivated, noting that no formal charges have yet been made public.
The sequence of events — detention by one federal agency followed immediately by rearrest by another — has fueled perceptions among opposition figures that the former governor is being subjected to coordinated pressure from state institutions.
