Floyd Samba Announces Himself With Stunning Brace as Manchester City Thrash Norwich 5-0

17-year-old academy sensation Floyd Samba enjoyed a dream Manchester City debut, scoring twice as the Carabao Cup holders swept aside Norwich City 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City began their Carabao Cup campaign in emphatic fashion on Thursday night, producing a dominant 5-0 victory over Norwich City — but the biggest story of the evening was the remarkable senior debut of teenage academy prospect Floyd Samba.

The 17-year-old was handed his first-team opportunity by manager Enzo Maresca and responded in spectacular fashion, scoring a brace to immediately announce himself on the senior stage.

Maresca made 10 changes from the side that defeated Manchester United in the Manchester derby, giving several players an opportunity to impress. Among them was Samba, who was entrusted with the central attacking role with Erling Haaland rested.

The decision proved to be a masterstroke.

Samba Makes Instant Impact

City controlled possession from the opening stages but Norwich initially defended resolutely, forcing the hosts to remain patient.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 29th minute, and it was Samba who stepped forward.

After Nico O’Reilly’s cross was diverted towards Allan, the Brazilian delivered an inviting ball into the penalty area. Samba showed excellent awareness and composure to meet it with a deft header, directing the ball into the corner and sending the Etihad into celebration.

It was a moment the teenager will remember for the rest of his career — his first senior appearance for Manchester City and his first senior goal arriving on the same night.

Just three minutes later, City doubled their advantage through Rayan Cherki, who calmly finished after being played through by Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Samba was again involved in the build-up, demonstrating that his influence extended beyond simply finding the net.

A Stunning Second Goal

If his first goal demonstrated his movement and composure inside the penalty area, Samba’s second showed another dimension to his attacking ability.

Just nine minutes after the restart, the teenager received the ball from Rayan Aït-Nouri inside the Norwich penalty area before producing a superb curling finish into the bottom-right corner.

The strike completed a memorable brace and put City 4-0 ahead.

For a player making his first senior appearance at just 17 years old, Samba displayed remarkable confidence, intelligent movement and an instinct for finding dangerous positions.

His performance earned him widespread praise and ensured that his name became one of the biggest talking points from City’s convincing victory.

Allan and McAidoo Complete the Rout

Samba was not the only debutant to enjoy a memorable evening.

Summer signing Allan also marked his first Manchester City appearance with an impressive performance. After providing the assist for Samba’s opener, the Brazilian winger got his own name on the scoresheet shortly after half-time.

Allan cut inside from the left before firing a low effort beyond Norwich goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw to make it 3-0.

City continued to dominate proceedings, while Norwich struggled to create a meaningful response.

The fifth and final goal arrived late in the game when substitute Ryan McAidoo, another product of City’s academy, found the net in the closing stages.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 5-0 victory and a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Another Academy Product Steps Into the Spotlight

Samba’s breakthrough is another example of Manchester City’s continued ability to develop young talent and provide opportunities on the biggest stage.

According to Manchester City’s official profile, Samba joined the club at Under-9 level and has spent almost a decade developing at the City Football Academy. He has represented England at youth level and is regarded as a versatile midfielder with strong technical ability, physical presence and an eye for goal.

His progress through the academy has already produced impressive numbers. During the 2025/26 campaign, Samba made 24 appearances across six competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists. He also scored a hat-trick in a Premier League 2 victory over Stoke City and scored a memorable free-kick in City’s FA Youth Cup final victory over Manchester United.

That background helps explain why Maresca was prepared to trust the teenager on such an important evening.

And Samba repaid that trust almost immediately.

A Night to Remember for Maresca’s Young Squad

The 5-0 victory was more than just a routine cup win for Manchester City. It provided Maresca with an opportunity to rotate his squad while simultaneously exposing several emerging talents to senior football.

Samba’s performance was the standout moment.

At only 17, he demonstrated the confidence required to operate in an unfamiliar senior environment, while his movement, finishing and composure suggested that he is capable of becoming an important player in City’s long-term plans.

Manchester City themselves described the performance as a “dream debut”, with Samba scoring in the 29th and 54th minutes.

The teenager’s night was made even more notable by the fact that he was not simply introduced as a late substitute. Maresca trusted him to start the match, lead the attack and perform alongside established senior players.

He responded with two goals.

City’s Carabao Cup Defence Continues

The victory sends Manchester City into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Brighton & Hove Albion.

For Maresca, the result maintains City’s strong start while also providing valuable evidence of the depth available within his squad.

For Samba, however, Thursday night could represent the beginning of something much bigger.

A 17-year-old academy player was given an opportunity to step onto the senior stage, and rather than looking overwhelmed, he produced a performance that demanded attention.

Two goals on debut, a hand in another attack and a place in City’s next round.

Floyd Samba could hardly have asked for a better introduction to Manchester City first-team football. The match facts above are supported by Manchester City’s official report and independent match coverage.
