Oyo teachers comply with NUT strike over abducted colleagues, pupils
Public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State were largely deserted this Monday as teachers complied with an indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils.
Teachers stayed away from classrooms following the union’s directive, while some students who reported to school later returned home after discovering that academic activities had been suspended.
The strike also disrupted the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with some examination supervisors seen waiting amid uncertainty over the situation.
The NUT ordered its members to withdraw their services from June 1, citing concerns over the fate of teachers and pupils abducted on May 15 from schools in Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area.
The union said the prolonged captivity of the victims has created fear among teachers and parents, adding that the strike will continue until further notice.
