Atiku Warns FG Over El-Rufai’s Detention

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned that the Federal Government would be held accountable if any harm comes to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is currently in custody over alleged financial irregularities.

El-Rufai honoured an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16, 2026, and was later taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission two days after his release by the EFCC. His media aide disclosed on Monday that he had spent eight days in detention and reportedly suffered a nosebleed while in custody.

Reacting via a post on X this Tuesday, Atiku called on the government to clarify which agency currently holds El-Rufai and to guarantee his safety, dignity, medical care, and access to his family and lawyers.

Atiku also raised concerns about alleged selective prosecution, insisting that the fight against corruption must not be politicised and warning that the government would be responsible if anything happens to the former governor.
