Man freed after 19 years in prison for robbery he never committed
A man has been released after spending nearly 19 years in prison for a r0bbery he didn’t c0mmit.
Back in 2005, two men r0bbed a 70-year-old in his Brooklyn apartment building.
The man, merican Kenneth Windley got caught up in the case after unknowingly using a st0len money order to buy his mother a stove.
He was convicted of sec0nd-degree r0bbery in 2007 and sentenced to 20 years to life because of prior convictions.
Windley always maintained his innocence, saying he had bought the money order from street sellers and didn’t know it was st0len.
Years later, he tracked down the men responsible, and they confirmed he had no part in the r0bbery.
Prosecutors re-examined the case, reviewed phone calls and emails, and agreed. His conviction was finally overturned.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said, “It has taken many years, but today we are able to validate his account, release him from pris0n and exonerate his name.”
Windley, speaking outside the courthouse, told reporters, “It cost me 20 years, but they said they corrected it now. That’s all that matters.”
After nearly two decades behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, Windley can finally put the past behind him.
