Zinedine Zidane Bans Haircuts at France National Team Camp as New Era Begins

Zinedine Zidane has reportedly introduced another unusual rule since taking charge of the France national team, with players now prohibited from bringing their personal hairdressers into the national team camp at Clairefontaine.

According to French newspaper L’Équipe, Zidane has decided that hairdressers and barbers will no longer be allowed inside the France national team base once a training camp begins. The decision is one of several changes the legendary former France midfielder has introduced at the start of his tenure as Les Bleus coach.

The rule means France internationals will have to make their preferred haircut arrangements before reporting for international duty. Once the camp is underway, personal hairdressers will not be permitted to enter Clairefontaine.

Zidane Begins to Put His Stamp on France

The decision may appear minor, but it reflects the broader changes Zidane is making to the daily environment surrounding the national team.

Zidane succeeded Didier Deschamps after the 2026 World Cup and has quickly begun changing several aspects of how the France squad operates.

His reported approach places greater emphasis on privacy, discipline and keeping the players’ attention centred on their footballing responsibilities.

The new haircut rule is therefore being viewed as part of a wider attempt to change the atmosphere around the national team rather than simply a decision about players’ hairstyles.

Clairefontaine’s Barber Tradition Comes to an End

Having personal hairdressers visit Clairefontaine had become a familiar part of life around the France squad.

According to French reporting, players had previously been able to bring trusted barbers and stylists into the national team environment. Some had developed close relationships with members of the squad over the years.

Interestingly, Zidane himself has a connection to the history of the practice.

While he was a France player in 2002, Zidane reportedly attempted to visit a shopping centre to get a haircut during an international gathering. His appearance attracted such a large crowd that the French Football Federation subsequently opted to bring the hairdresser directly to Clairefontaine instead.

More than two decades later, Zidane is now the coach responsible for ending that arrangement.

Zidane Also Restricts Media Access

The haircut decision is not the only change introduced by the new France manager.

Zidane has also reportedly reduced media access around the team’s arrival at Clairefontaine. In previous years, the arrival of France’s stars became a major media event, with photographers and television crews capturing players’ outfits as they entered the national team headquarters.

Those images frequently generated significant discussion on social media and in the French media.

Under Zidane, that practice has been curtailed, with access around the team’s arrival restricted. Reports also indicate that immersive videos showing aspects of players’ lives inside the camp have been stopped.

The changes point toward a more private environment around Les Bleus, with the new manager seeking to reduce distractions away from football.

A New Culture Under Zidane

Zidane’s arrival represents the beginning of a new chapter for French football.

The former World Cup-winning midfielder knows the France setup from both sides. He was a key member of the 1998 World Cup-winning generation and later returned to international football as a highly decorated coach at Real Madrid.

His first days with the national team have therefore attracted considerable attention, not only because of his tactical ideas but also because of the changes he is making to the squad’s daily routine.

The haircut ban has quickly become one of the most talked-about examples.

While there is no indication that Zidane believes hairstyles themselves are a footballing problem, the reported restriction demonstrates his willingness to make even small changes to the team’s established routines.

France Enter a New Era

Zidane’s first competitive period in charge comes with considerable expectations surrounding the French national team.

His appointment followed Deschamps’ long tenure, meaning the new manager is taking over a team accustomed to competing at the highest level of international football.

The early signs suggest that Zidane wants to establish his own identity immediately — from training methods and media access to the everyday rules governing life inside the national team camp.

And for France’s players, that apparently includes arriving at Clairefontaine with their haircut already sorted.

The message from Zidane is clear: once the camp begins, football comes first.
