DAVID RAYA CAN MAKE PREMIER LEAGUE HISTORY AS ARSENAL GOALKEEPER CHASES FOURTH STRAIGHT GOLDEN GLOVE
David Raya is once again on course to write his name into Premier League history.
The Arsenal goalkeeper has already established himself as one of the league’s most consistent shot-stoppers, and the 2026/27 campaign presents him with an opportunity to achieve something no goalkeeper has ever done: win the Premier League Golden Glove four seasons in a row.
Raya enters the new season having won the award in each of the previous three campaigns.
His latest Golden Glove triumph came in the 2025/26 season, when he recorded 19 Premier League clean sheets in 37 appearances, helping Arsenal secure their first league title since 2004. That was his third consecutive Golden Glove, putting him alongside the select group of goalkeepers who have achieved a hat-trick of successive awards.
Now, the Spanish international has another target.
FOUR STRAIGHT GOLDEN GLOVES?
The Premier League Golden Glove has been awarded since the 2004/05 season, with the goalkeeper recording the most clean sheets receiving the prize.
Only three goalkeepers before Raya had managed to win the award in three consecutive seasons: Pepe Reina, Joe Hart and Ederson. Raya joined that exclusive group in 2025/26.
However, no goalkeeper has ever won the Premier League Golden Glove four seasons consecutively.
That makes the 2026/27 campaign particularly significant for Raya.
The Arsenal No. 1 has already made a strong start, recording three clean sheets in his first five Premier League appearances this season. According to Opta’s current player data, Raya has also accumulated 71 Premier League clean sheets across his career, including his years at Brentford and Arsenal.
With the season still in its early stages, the Golden Glove race remains open, but Raya’s record means he is once again firmly in the conversation.
71 PREMIER LEAGUE CLEAN SHEETS AND COUNTING
Raya’s overall Premier League numbers underline the consistency he has developed since arriving in England.
The goalkeeper has now made 174 Premier League appearances and kept 71 clean sheets, according to Opta’s latest data.
His Arsenal record has been particularly impressive.
Since becoming Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper, Raya has played a central role in one of the strongest defensive units in English football. His ability to make crucial saves has been complemented by his distribution, composure under pressure and willingness to operate as an additional outfield player when Arsenal build from the back.
His clean-sheet numbers have also been remarkable. He recorded 16 Premier League shutouts in his first full Arsenal season, 13 in 2024/25, and then improved that figure dramatically to 19 in the 2025/26 title-winning campaign.
ARTETA’S FAITH IN RAYA
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has repeatedly praised the goalkeeper’s contribution to the team.
Arteta has described Raya as a “tremendous signing”, highlighting the Spaniard’s quality and mentality.
The manager’s assessment reflects the importance Raya has assumed within Arsenal’s system since his arrival from Brentford. Rather than simply being viewed as a traditional shot-stopper, Raya has become an important component of Arsenal’s tactical approach.
His ability to receive the ball under pressure, find teammates with accurate passes and initiate attacks from deep has made him particularly valuable to Arteta.
The Premier League also highlighted Arteta’s praise of Raya after the goalkeeper secured his third successive Golden Glove, with the Arsenal manager describing his consistency as exceptional and his level as remarkably high.
MORE THAN JUST CLEAN SHEETS
Raya’s importance to Arsenal extends beyond the Golden Glove statistics.
Modern goalkeeping demands considerably more than simply preventing shots from entering the net. Goalkeepers are increasingly expected to participate in possession, play outside their penalty areas, support the defensive line and help their teams escape opposition pressure.
Raya’s technical ability has made him particularly suited to Arsenal’s style.
His performances have also included crucial saves in important matches. During Arsenal’s title-winning campaign, for example, his outstanding stop against West Ham United was highlighted by the Premier League as one of the decisive moments of his season.
RECOGNITION ON THE WORLD STAGE
Raya’s performances have also earned him recognition beyond the Premier League.
For the 2026 Ballon d’Or awards, Raya is among the goalkeepers nominated for the Yashin Trophy, the award presented to the world’s best goalkeeper. The nomination places him among an elite group of goalkeepers receiving recognition for their performances over the relevant season.
It is worth noting that Raya is not nominated for the main men’s Ballon d’Or prize itself; his nomination is for the Yashin Trophy.
That distinction does not diminish the significance of the recognition. The Yashin Trophy is specifically designed to recognise outstanding goalkeeping performances, making Raya’s inclusion an important acknowledgment of his recent achievements.
HISTORY IS WITHIN REACH
Raya has already accomplished something very few Premier League goalkeepers have managed.
Three consecutive Golden Gloves have placed him alongside Premier League legends such as Reina, Hart and Ederson. Now he has the opportunity to go one step further.
If Raya finishes the 2026/27 season with the most clean sheets, he would become the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to win the Golden Glove four consecutive times.
There is still a long way to go, and the competition will be intense. Goalkeeping awards ultimately depend on the number of clean sheets accumulated across an entire league campaign, meaning Arsenal’s defensive performances will be just as important as Raya’s individual displays.
But the opportunity is there.
71 Premier League clean sheets.
Three consecutive Golden Gloves.
A fourth within reach.
And a place in Premier League history potentially waiting.
For David Raya, the 2026/27 season could become another defining chapter in an already remarkable Arsenal career.
