Former Adamawa State governorship candidate, Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani, has formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in a move widely interpreted as part of an emerging political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Binani, who flew the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 Adamawa governorship race, was officially received into the NDC at a ceremony in Abuja, where she was presented with her membership card by party leaders, including national figurehead Seriake Dickson.
Her defection comes barely nine months after she exited the APC for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), underscoring the fluidity of Nigeria’s political landscape as parties and politicians reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Speaking at the event, Binani explained that her decision followed a careful evaluation of the NDC’s constitution, which she said reflects a commitment to structured, policy-driven governance, internal democracy, and inclusive leadership. She stressed that her move was guided by prevailing political realities and the interests of her supporters, many of whom had already aligned with the party.
Addressing criticism over her recent party switches, the former senator maintained that political decisions are often shaped by local dynamics and evolving circumstances, noting that she harbours no resentment toward her former platforms.
Party leaders described her entry as a strategic boost to the NDC’s expansion efforts, particularly in the North-East. Dickson said Binani’s defection reflects growing confidence in the party’s ideology, which he characterised as anchored on service, inclusion, and national development.
He also used the occasion to call on women and young Nigerians to take advantage of what he described as the NDC’s inclusive framework, positioning the party as a viable alternative in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive political space.
Binani, who represented Adamawa Central in the Senate from 2019 to 2023, remains a significant political figure in the state. Her 2023 governorship bid drew national attention amid controversy during the collation process, before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) eventually declared incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri the winner.
Her latest move is seen by analysts as part of a broader pattern of coalition-building and political recalibration among opposition figures seeking to challenge established parties ahead of 2027. With shifting alliances and new platforms emerging, Binani’s defection may signal the beginning of deeper realignments capable of reshaping the country’s electoral dynamics in the coming years.
