Anambra Offers Residents Free Hypertension Checks

The Anambra State Government has announced free hypertension checks for residents in primary healthcare centres and general hospitals across the state to mark the 2026 World Hypertension Day.

The state Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, disclosed this during a press briefing held in Awka on Tuesday, where he said the initiative was aimed at raising awareness about hypertension and encouraging regular blood pressure checks.

Obidike described hypertension as one of the deadliest non-communicable diseases globally and said the state government had intensified efforts to tackle the health challenge through its “Solution Know Your Number” campaign.

He added that residents would receive free screening and access to treatment in selected state-owned hospitals, while also urging people to maintain healthy diets, exercise regularly and reduce excessive alcohol consumption.

The commissioner also commended the World Health Organisation and Population Services International for supporting the campaign across the state.
