“Leave Our Son Alone” — Amupitan’s Kinsmen Defend INEC Chairman
Residents of Ayetoro Gbede community in Ijumu Local Government Area, Kogi State, have urged critics to stop what they describe as a campaign of distractions and attacks against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan.
The community, made up of over 1,000 youths and elders, staged a solidarity rally where they openly declared support for Amupitan, insisting he is a man of integrity who should be allowed to focus on his national duties.
They dismissed allegations and calls for his resignation as baseless and politically motivated, urging Nigerians to avoid attempts to drag him into partisan controversy.
Speaking on behalf of the community, leaders said Amupitan has a long record of public service, including roles in academia such as Head of Department, Dean of Faculty of Law, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Jos.
They also called on the INEC Chairman to remain focused and ensure the delivery of free, fair, and credible elections ahead of 2027, expressing confidence in his leadership.
The protest comes amid ongoing public debates over the neutrality and independence of electoral institutions in Nigeria.
