Police Arraign Three Agunechemba Operatives Over Alleged Illegal Possession of Firearms in Anambra.
The Nigeria Police Force, Zone 13 Command, Ukpo, Anambra State, has arraigned three members of the Agunechemba local security outfit before the Federal High Court I sitting in Awka over alleged unlawful possession of firearms.
The operatives, who were attached to the Onitsha South Local Government Area, were accused of possessing three pump-action rifles without valid licences, contrary to provisions of the Firearms Act.
According to court documents obtained by our correspondent, the charge sheet was dated April 16, 2026, while the defendants were formally brought before the court on Friday, May 15, 2026.
The suit, marked FHC/AWK/C/73C/2026, listed the Inspector-General of Police as the complainant. The defendants were identified as Echezona Ezeonyejekwe, Sunday Azuma and Chinedu Nwakwo.
One of the charges stated that the defendants, alongside others still at large, allegedly possessed three prohibited pump-action rifles between September 9, 2025, and April 14, 2026, at No. 93 Silas Works Road, Fegge, Onitsha, within the jurisdiction of the court, without licences duly granted to them.
The prosecution said the alleged offence contravenes Section 3 and is punishable under Section 27(1)(a)(i) of the Firearms Act, Cap F28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Following the reading of the charges, the court ordered that the defendants be remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre pending further hearing on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Onitsha South Local Government Area has criticised the actions of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 13 Ukpo, accusing the command of undermining the Anambra State Homeland Security Law through the arrest and prosecution of the security operatives.
