Jubilati0ns as Mahama asks Ghanaians to report landlords demanding more than 6 months rent advance
President John Dramani Mahama has urged tenants to rep0rt landlords who demand rent advances beyond the legal limit, calling for stricter enforcement to protect tenants.
Speaking at Jubilee House on March 17 during a meeting with Organised Labour, he highlighted the heavy burden of housing costs on households and stressed the need for a national housing dialogue between government, the private sector, and labour unions to develop a sustainable social housing policy.
“Housing is a major problem, consuming much of households’ income. We need to work together on a social housing policy so workers can afford to buy or rent at reasonable rates,” Mahama said.
He blamed Ghana’s housing deficit for enabling some landlords to demand unlawful rent advances.
While the law caps rent advances at six months, some landlords charge more, and both parties often avoid seeking redress through the Rent Control Department.
“The reason private house owners are taking advantage is because of the housing deficit. We have the rent court, but many landlords and tenants are not using it,” he noted.
Mahama encouraged tenants to report vi0lations, promising authorities would act against offending landlords.
