Sadio Mané Invests $20 Million in SM10 Agro Project to Transform His Hometown and Create Thousands of Jobs
Senegalese football star Sadio Mané is taking his commitment to his hometown of Bambali to another level, investing approximately $20 million (CFA 11.7 billion) in a major agro-industrial project designed to create employment, develop agriculture and add value to locally produced mangoes.
The project, known as SM10 Agro, officially moved forward on September 19, 2026, when Mané laid the foundation stone for the development in Bambali, in Senegal’s Sédhiou region. The project is being financed from Mané’s personal funds, according to reports and his own announcement.
A $20 Million Investment in Bambali
SM10 Agro is planned as a 500-hectare agro-industrial development, combining large-scale mango cultivation with processing facilities and agricultural infrastructure.
One of its most notable features will be an orchard containing approximately 78,000 mango trees, primarily Kent mangoes. The project is also expected to include a 10-hectare industrial park dedicated to processing locally grown fruit.
Rather than simply producing and selling fresh mangoes, the project aims to process the fruit locally into products such as:
- Mango pulp and purée
- Dried mango
- Mango butter
- Other processed agricultural products
- Guava products
The planned processing facilities are expected to have a capacity of approximately 8,500 to 10,500 tonnes annually, depending on the source and phase of the project.
Thousands of Jobs Expected
Employment creation is one of the central objectives of SM10 Agro.
Mané’s announcement says the project is expected to create 327 permanent jobs, with employment potentially reaching around 1,000 jobs at launch and approximately 2,500 jobs over time as the wider project develops.
This means the impact could extend beyond people directly employed by the processing plant.
Farmers, transporters, agricultural workers, technicians, processors, suppliers and other businesses connected to the agricultural value chain could potentially benefit as the project expands.
The development is also expected to include an agricultural training centre and research facilities, creating opportunities for young people and women to acquire skills connected to farming and agro-processing.
Tackling Mango Waste in Casamance
The investment comes against a significant agricultural challenge in southern Senegal.
Reports indicate that the Sédhiou region loses an estimated 30–40 percent of its mango harvest because of inadequate storage and processing infrastructure. Without sufficient facilities to preserve and process the fruit, farmers can lose significant portions of their harvest after production.
SM10 Agro is designed to address part of this problem by creating infrastructure where mangoes can be collected, processed and converted into products with a longer shelf life.
Instead of relying entirely on fresh-fruit sales, local production can potentially be transformed into commercially valuable products that can be sold domestically and exported.
From Football Success to Local Economic Development
Mané’s relationship with Bambali is well documented.
Before SM10 Agro, the footballer had already funded or supported several community projects in his hometown, including a school, hospital, mosque and petrol station. His latest investment represents a different model: moving from primarily supporting social infrastructure toward establishing a productive economic enterprise.
The significance of SM10 Agro therefore goes beyond the size of the financial investment.
It represents an attempt to build an economic activity that can continue generating employment and commercial opportunities rather than relying solely on one-off donations.
“Before the Stadiums, the Lights and the Victories, There Was Bambali”
Speaking about the project, Mané emphasized his connection to the community where he was born and raised.
“I don’t want to be remembered only for the goals I’ve scored. Before the stadiums, the lights and the victories, there was Bambali.”
Mané explained that Bambali was where his dreams began and where he learned values that continued to guide him. He said the project was intended to create lasting opportunities for families and young people in Bambali and the wider Casamance region.
The statement reflects the broader motivation behind the project: creating opportunities close to home and ensuring that local agricultural resources generate more economic value within the community.
Solar-Powered Industrial Development
Another notable feature of SM10 Agro is its planned energy model.
According to Mané’s project announcement, the processing facility is designed to operate entirely on solar energy. The project is also expected to incorporate modern agricultural and processing infrastructure.
If implemented as planned, the combination of renewable energy, agricultural production and local processing could make SM10 Agro a significant agro-industrial development in the region.
Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, according to Mané’s announcement.
Building a Future Beyond Football
For Mané, SM10 Agro is also about legacy.
The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star has spent much of his career playing on some of the biggest stages in world football. But his latest project demonstrates an ambition to leave an economic footprint in the community where his journey began.
A successful agro-industrial operation could provide jobs, create demand for agricultural labour, reduce post-harvest losses and encourage additional economic activity around Bambali.
The project’s long-term results will ultimately depend on successful construction, agricultural production, processing capacity, market access and sustained management. But its scale — $20 million in investment, 500 hectares, about 78,000 mango trees and a long-term employment target of around 2,500 positions — makes SM10 Agro a major undertaking.

A Different Kind of Legacy
Sadio Mané’s SM10 Agro project demonstrates how a successful African athlete can channel part of his wealth into a large-scale economic project in his community.
From the football pitches of Bambali to some of the biggest stadiums in the world, Mané’s journey has taken him far from home. Now, through SM10 Agro, he is investing in the land and people of the community where that journey began.
For Mané, the ambition is clear: Bambali should not only be remembered as the place where his football dream started, but also as a place where new economic opportunities can begin.
