Court to Deliver Judgment on Goodluck Jonathan’s 2027 Eligibility Today
The Federal High Court in Abuja is scheduled to deliver its definitive judgment today, Friday, regarding a legal challenge aimed at disqualifying former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
The plaintiff, legal practitioner Johnmary Jideobi, is seeking a court order to restrain the former president from participating in the race on constitutional grounds, arguing that his previous tenure renders him ineligible for another term under the current laws of the land.
In a robust defense, Jonathan’s lead counsel, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, has urged the presiding judge to dismiss the suit entirely, asserting that the matter of eligibility has already been settled in favor of his client by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal in previous rulings.
Justice Peter Lifu had previously declined to strike out the case despite the repeated absence of the plaintiff and representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission, opting instead to provide a final opportunity for a fair hearing before adjourning for today’s ruling.
