Youths Storm Okpoko Police Station, Demand Arrest Of UBET Taskforce Officials Over Fatal Accident In Onitsha
Angry youths, in the early hours of today, Saturday, 2 May, stormed the Okpoko Divisional Police Station, demanding the arrest and prosecution of officials of the United Hybrid Enforcement Team (UBET) allegedly linked to a fatal accident that claimed the life of Joe Nwosu, a trader at Ogbo-Ogwu Market, and several others at Upper Iweka, along the Onitsha–Owerri Road.
The tragic incident occurred yesterday at about 9:00 a.m. near Goodness and Mercy Motor Park, Onitsha.
Eyewitnesses and protesters, including Kenechukwu Chiononso and Justice Ozobi, alleged that the victims were passengers in a commercial tricycle (popularly known as “keke”) when a vehicle rammed into them.
They further claimed that moments before the crash, operatives of the UBET enforcement team were seen dragging the steering wheel of the driver, causing him to lose control and collide with the tricycle conveying passengers.
The youths, who marched to the Okpoko Police Station, called for justice and insisted that those responsible be immediately apprehended and held accountable.
Responding, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okpoko Division appealed for calm, assuring the protesters that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.
