INEC Rejects AI, Screenshots in Amupitan X Probe
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it will not rely on artificial intelligence (AI) analysis or social media screenshots in its ongoing investigation into alleged digital impersonation linked to its chairman, Joash Amupitan.
The commission clarified that only verifiable digital forensic evidence obtained through certified experts and relevant platforms will be considered credible in determining the authenticity of the X (formerly Twitter) account at the centre of the controversy.
The probe follows allegations that an X account bearing the name of Amupitan made partisan political comments during the 2023 election cycle, raising concerns about the neutrality of the electoral body. Screenshots of posts and AI-based analyses—reportedly including those generated using tools like Grok—have circulated online as purported evidence linking the account to the INEC chairman.
However, INEC officials insist that such materials are insufficient for a conclusive determination. According to the commission, screenshots can be easily manipulated, while AI-generated assessments lack the evidentiary standard required in sensitive institutional investigations.
Instead, INEC said it is engaging digital forensic professionals to trace the origin, ownership, and activity logs of the account through backend data, including IP records and platform verification channels. The commission also indicated it may liaise directly with X to obtain authenticated account information.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of INEC’s leadership following the 2023 general elections, with critics demanding transparency and accountability over any perceived political bias.
INEC reiterated its commitment to due process, emphasizing that the integrity of its leadership and the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system remain paramount as the investigation continues.
