The north believed Ojukwu knew about 1966 coup, Gowon Finally Opens Up In Upcoming memoir

Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has revealed in his yet to be released memoir, My Life of Duty and Allegiance, that many northern military officers believed Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu had prior knowledge of the January 1966 coup and wanted action taken against him.

The memoir revisits one of Nigeria’s most controversial political moments — the coup that claimed the lives of top northern leaders, including Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Northern Premier Ahmadu Bello.

Gowon’s account is expected to reignite conversations around the events that shaped Nigeria’s civil war and political history.
